Greetings from Cyprus! It feels like just yesterday we jetted off to Romania for a friend’s wedding (a few highlights here), and now we’ve pulled yet another all-nighter with a few hours of napping on the plane—this time going to Paphos, where Aphrodite is said to have landed when she rose from the sea. 🌊
We’re here for another wedding, and this trip is even shorter. A proper drive-by visit, with a flight there and back in the blink of an eye. Our 2 to 3-hour nap on the plane wasn’t quite enough to last us all day, then add the time zone changes, and you get two sleepy travellers.
We did enjoy today with a walk around and some nice Mezze platter from a local cafe, far enough away from the tourist spots. And I just had to finish the day by walking to the beach.
Watching the waves, I always think to myself, ‘There’s simply no way this doesn’t heal a part of me.’ The thing is, I never get to find out. Because I rarely travel for prolonged periods, so my time next to water seems never quite long enough.
And speaking of beaches, I wanted to share the portrait session I did for my friend who got married in Romania. This was the day after her wedding. We got a little lost on the way to the beach, so we almost missed that beautiful sunset, but we tracked down the narrow gap between the high-rise buildings where the sun still managed to reach the sea.
The light changes so fast the moment the sun starts to go down. You start off with a bright ball of light, and in just a moment, it mellows out into a soft, warm glow.
As much as I love the warmth of the evening sun, the moments just before the ‘blue hour’ are even more beautiful. The yellow-orange tones start to disappear slowly, changing to pinks, blues, and purples.
Weren’t we lucky with that sky? Gosh, getting moments like these in England is like once in a blue moon.
I have a lovely print of the sea in Croatia, where I captured a bird flying past. It’s one of those prints that never get old, but I think I may have to order this one, too. To me, this image above embodies everything that romance is when you're all by yourself. You’re lost in thoughts, watching the soft waves move back and forth, and somehow trivial problems seem to disappear, and you’re just left at one with nature.
As we finished up and started walking back up towards the main road, a friendly face spotted us and came to say hi. I already shared these two last week, but there is a reason I wanted to share them again.
I’ve been working on a book of cats I’ve photographed across Europe, and both Romania and Cyprus have given me plenty to work with. I’m not sure which place has more cats—Romania or Cyprus—but they are always the highlight of my trips.
The canine friends are not to be forgotten, either. There were plenty of them dotted around all the different Romanian gardens. I haven’t spotted that many in Cyprus just yet, but we have another day to go.
So far, I’ve had mixed feelings about Cyprus, but I’ll share those (alongside some photos) with you next week. Now, it’s time for me to get a good night’s sleep and be fresh-faced for the wedding!
Thanks for joining me on this.
